By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Sergeant First Class George W. Stewart (ASN: 1270365), United States Army, is cited for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Sergeant First Class Stewart distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 104th Field Signal Battalion, 29th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near Bois de Consenvoye, France, 12 – 14 October 1918. While under heavy bombardment of artillery and gas, and without regard for his personal safety, Sergeant Stewart courageously continued to lay wires and maintain communication between the front line battalion and regimental headquarters of the 113th Infantry.
