By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Second Lieutenant (Field Artillery), [then Private] Daniel J. McCarthy (ASN: 134085), United States Army, is cited for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Second Lieutenant (Field Artillery), [then Private] McCarthy distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Battery E, 101st Field Artillery Regiment, 26th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action on 27 July 1918, near L’Etang de Logette and again on 29 July 1918, near Preaux Ferme, France. When telephonic communications was cut by terrific shell fire, Private McCarthy crossed and re-crossed between his battery and its battalion headquarters until wire communication was reestablished.
