By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Mechanic Charles J. Madden (ASN: 1453830), United States Army, is cited for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Mechanic Madden distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Company L, 138th Infantry Regiment, 35th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near Cheppy, France, 26 September 1918. With utter disregard for his own personal safety, Mechanic Madden voluntarily went out under heavy machine gun fire into “No Man’s Land” and rescued one of his comrades who had been seriously wounded.
