By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Sergeant William C. Black (ASN: 1322842), United States Army, is cited for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Sergeant Black distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 115th Machine-Gun Battalion, 30th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action at Vaux Andigny and Molain, France, 11 October 1918. When his company commander, First Lieutenant Sidney J. Stelling, was wounded, Sergeant Black took command of his platoon and led it across area swept by enemy machine gun fire to designated positions and remained there until relieved.
