By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Corporal James Coakley (ASN: 1080292), United States Army Air Service, is cited for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Corporal Coakley distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with 5th Balloon Company, in action at La Besace, France, 23 October 1918. With utter disregard for his own personal safety, Corporal Coakley rescued a basket of instruments, maps, and photographs from a falling burning balloon. His devotion to duty and his determined and courageous work were an inspiration to the men and a great benefit to the service.
