Sergeant Adams distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Company D, 108th Machine-Gun Battalion, 28th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action at Apremont, France, 1 October 1918. With only a few men of his section left and the enemy at close range, Sergeant Adams remained at his post and directed the fire resulting in driving away the enemy.

While under heavy enemy shell fire, Sergeant Adams voluntarily took supplies to gun positions and assisted the wounded to a first aid station.
