War Department, General Orders No. 3 (1922), Rescinded and replaced by General Orders No. 19 (1922)

By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Corporal Edward F. Devlin (ASN: 4903149), United States Army, is cited for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Corporal Devlin distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 101st Infantry Regiment, 26th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action in the Bellieu Bois, France, 25 October 1918. While in charge of the squad on the extreme right of the company’s line, Corporal Devlin was furiously attacked by an enemy patrol bent on capturing prisoners. All of his men were wounded by the first blast of bullets which was poured into their midst. Corporal Devlin, single-handed, stood his ground, fighting with consummate courage and determination, and although he himself received wounds from which he later died, he succeeded in rescuing one of his wounded comrades from the hands of the enemy and held his position until relief reached him.
