    By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private First Class Milo E. Shadle (ASN: 572327), United States Army, is cited for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Private First Class Shadle distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Company G, 58th Infantry Regiment, 4th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near the Vesle River, France, 5 August 1918. Private Shadle, in the face of intense enemy machine gun fire, crossed the Vesle River, captured two enemy machine guns, killed four of the enemy, and drove the remainder away. By accomplishing his mission, he enabled the Engineers to construct bridges across the river.
