By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private Joseph Peterson (ASN: 73674), United States Army, is cited for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Private Peterson distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Company L, 104th Infantry Regiment, 26 Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action at Chateau Thierry, France, on 29 July 1918. While serving as 3d Battalion runner, Private Peterson was directed to locate Company L, the advancing company with whom liaison had been lost. He displayed conspicuous bravery by going twice across an exposed field under heavy enemy shell fire and violent machine gun fire, thereby succeeding in locating Company L and reestablishing liaison between this company and the battalion headquarters.
