By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private First Class Bernice B. Bryan (ASN: 2663345), United States Army, is cited for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Private First Class Bryan distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Company G, 145th Infantry Regiment, 37th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action at Eyne, Belgium, on 1 November 1918. In the face of intense artillery and machine gun fire, Private Bryan with Corporal Henning Wallin voluntarily crossed the canal near the Escaut River and with automatic rifle fire covered the advance of the remainder of the company.
