By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Corporal Edward W. Murphy (ASN: 1212115), United States Army, is cited for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Corporal Murphy distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Company M, 107th Infantry Regiment, 27th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near Le Caterlet, France, 29 September 1918. Corporal Murphy, in full view of an enemy machine gun crew which was holding up the advance of the platoon, carried a Lewis Gun from a shell hole in which there were several wounded men to avoid drawing fire in that direction. He then crawled to a new position from which he compelled the surrender of the machine gunners. His daring and bravery set a splendid example to all his comrades.
