By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Corporal [then Private] John Fowler (ASN: 1320349), United States Army, is cited for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Corporal Fowler distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Company E, 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action at Bellicourt, France, 29 September 1918. Corporal Fowler took command of his squad after the corporal in charge had been killed, leading the squad until all became casualties except himself. He continued to advance alone, carrying his Lewis Gun and six drums of ammunition. With the aid of this gun, and alone, he successfully attacked two enemy machine gun posts, capturing the guns and the remainder of the gun teams.
