By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Sergeant Avery M. Davis (ASN: 1166103), United States Army, is cited for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Sergeant Davis distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Company G, 145th Infantry Regiment, 37th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action at Eyne, Belgium, 1 November 1918. In the face of intense artillery and machine gun fire and in spite of having been gassed, Sergeant Davis voluntarily crossed the Escaut River and went to the assistance of a wounded comrade on the opposite bank and carried him to a place of safety.
