By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), First Lieutenant (Infantry) George B. Van Buren, United States Army, is cited for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. First Lieutenant (Infantry) Van Buren distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with the 311th Infantry Regiment, 78th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near Grand Pre, France, 27 October 1918. In command of his platoon, supporting an infantry attack, Lieutenant Van Buren showed exceptional daring and ability, with a total disregard of personal danger. The successful assault of the commanding height by the Infantry was largely due to the rapidity and effectiveness of the fire of his 1-pounder guns in destroying the hostile machine guns, which for 12 days had succeeded in holding this strong point against repeated attacks.
