By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Second Lieutenant Cullen C. Collinsworth, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action while serving with the 2d Machine-Gun Battalion. Though severely shocked and bruised by a shell at the opening of the attack, 4 October 1918, he continued to skillfully lead his platoon throughout the remainder of the action. Near Fleville France, he helped to recover machine gun equipment when exposed to heavy fire.
