Corporal O’Connor distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 28th Infantry Regiment, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near Soissons, France, 19 July 1918, in reorganizing his platoon under heavy machine gun and artillery fire, and by force of his example carrying his section of the line forward to its objective.

Corporal O’Connor was in command of a group of men in a particularly dangerous position. His fearless example was largely responsible for the successful defense of the position.
