By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Corporal Earl James (ASN: 124996), United States Army, is cited for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Corporal James distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Battery F, 5th Field Artillery, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action in the Toul sector, 25 February 1918. He fearlessly exposed himself to heavy fire of gas and high explosive shell, repairing and maintaining lines of communication between his battery and higher command, thus insuring the transmission of important orders to his battery.
