By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Battalion Sergeant Major William J. Flynn (ASN: 154759), United States Army, is cited for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Battalion Sergeant Major Flynn distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with the 1st Battalion, 1st Engineers, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action north of Exermont, France, 8 – 9 October 1918, while going to the front line during an enemy counterattack in which he secured valuable information for his battalion commander.
