The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Brigadier General Jens Anderson Doe (ASN: 0-3743), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as Assistant Division Commander of the 163d Infantry Regiment, in action against the enemy on Biak Island, from 12 to 16 June 1944. Brigadier General Doe was given the mission of commanding two assault regiments and coordinating the advance of troops on the air strips. He displayed outstanding leadership and devotion to duty under Japanese machine gun, rifle, and mortar fire, and personally moving among forward assault troops. By his calm manner and courageous actions, he greatly assisted the advance toward the Division’s achievements. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Brigadier General Doe, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.

As commander of an infantry regiment which was engaged in wiping out the remaining points of enemy resistance, General Doe distinguished himself with his coolness and gallantry under fire. In the reduction of these strongly fortified areas his outstanding leadership and courageous conduct were a continuous inspiration to his troops. General Doe’s presence in the most forward areas and his disregard of personal danger were largely responsible for the high morale of his troops and the successful outcome of these operations.
