The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal to Major of Infantry Henri S. A. Hanaut, French Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished service in a position of great responsibility to the Government of the United States, during World War I. As a Member of the French Military Commission, Major Hanaut was on duty with the Training and Instruction Branch of the War Plans Division of the General Staff. In this branch he was charged with teaching the higher phases of the military art, a course which only a talented and experienced officer could have conducted. His services to the United States were of inestimable value.
