The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal to Colonel (Field Artillery) Augustus B. Warfield, United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished services to the Government of the United States, in a duty of great responsibility during World War I. As Commanding Officer of the 322d Field Artillery, 83d Division, from 22 August 1917 until 15 February 1919, Colonel Warfield displayed untiring energy, unusual administrative ability, and an unfailing dependability, these qualities being reflected in the excellence of his regiment. His outstanding ability as an organizer, his leadership and his devotion to duty were material factors in the successful operations of his division.

    By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Colonel (Field Artillery) Augustus B. Warfield, United States Army, is cited for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Colonel Warfield distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Commanding Officer, 322d Field Artillery Regiment, 83d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near Samogneux, France, 23 October 1918. Although twice badly gassed, Colonel Warfield refused to be evacuated and continued to command his regiment, thus adding greatly to its efficiency during the attack on Bois d’ Etaye, and contributing materially to the success of the Division in this operation.
