By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Lieutenant Colonel (Quartermaster Corps) Daniel Gay Stivers, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Lieutenant Colonel Stivers, while Quartermaster of the Third Division during the campaigns on the Marne, St. Mihiel and the Meuse-Argonne, succeeded at all times, in the face of the greatest physical difficulties, and under heavy artillery and small arms fire, in maintaining an excellent and adequate supply which contributed in no small degree to the success of his Division.
