The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal to Lieutenant Colonel (Quartermaster Corps) Daniel G. Stivers, United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished services to the Government of the United States, in a duty of great responsibility during World War I. As Quartermaster of the 3d Division during the Aisne-Marne, St. Mihiel, and Meuse-Argonne offensives, in maintaining an excellent system of quartermaster supplies and utilities under the greatest difficulties of active service, Lieutenant Colonel Stivers’ superb efforts contributed in a marked degree to the success of this division throughout its operations.     By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Lieutenant Colonel (Quartermaster Corps) Daniel Gay Stivers, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Lieutenant Colonel Stivers, while Quartermaster of the Third Division during the campaigns on the Marne, St. Mihiel and the Meuse-Argonne, succeeded at all times, in the face of the greatest physical difficulties, and under heavy artillery and small arms fire, in maintaining an excellent and adequate supply which contributed in no small degree to the success of his Division.
