By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) James H. Stansfield, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Lieutenant Colonel Stansfield distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with the 132d Infantry Regiment, 33d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action at Bois de Chaume, France, 9 – 11 October 1918, in advancing with his front line troops and personally reorganizing scattered groups under heavy machine gun and artillery fire.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) James H. Stansfield, United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished services to the Government of the United States, in a duty of great responsibility during World War I, serving with the 132d Infantry, 33d Division. In the Bois-de-Chaume during 9 – 11 October 1918, when due to his rare presence of mind and courage, Lieutenant Colonel Stansfield prevented the disorganization of units of regiments that had suffered heavy casualties. He personally reorganized scattered groups and caused them to hold a line which appeared untenable. He has rendered services of great value.
