The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry) James H. Stansfield, United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished services to the Government of the United States, in a duty of great responsibility during World War I, serving with the 132d Infantry, 33d Division. In the Bois-de-Chaume during 9 – 11 October 1918, when due to his rare presence of mind and courage, Lieutenant Colonel Stansfield prevented the disorganization of units of regiments that had suffered heavy casualties. He personally reorganized scattered groups and caused them to hold a line which appeared untenable. He has rendered services of great value.
