    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Army Distinguished Service Medal to Major General William Edgar Shedd, Jr. (ASN: 0-2217), United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished services to the Government of the United States, in a duty of great responsibility, as Commanding General, Antilles Department, from 1 December 1943 to 26 August 1944. General Shedd accomplished the complete reorganization of the Antilles Department necessitated by adjustment in troop allocations as a result of changes within the world situation in the prosecution of the war. He has at all times effected the successful coordination of joint Army and Navy activities within the Antilles Department and through his diplomacy, tact, and foresight has contributed to a large degree to negotiations with colonial representatives of Allied Governments within the area of the Caribbean Coastal Frontier.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal to Colonel (Coast Artillery Corps) William Edgar Shedd, Jr. (ASN: 0-2217), United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished services to the Government of the United States, in a duty of great responsibility during World War I. Colonel Shedd served with marked efficiency as Instructor and then as Director of the Heavy Artillery School in France. As Assistant in the Office of the Chief of Artillery, American Expeditionary Forces, and later Chief of the Heavy Artillery Section in that office, he rendered services of inestimable value in connection with the organization, equipment, and training of the Heavy Artillery troops in France.
