War Department, General Orders No. 59 (1921)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal (Posthumously) to Major (Transportation Corps) John McDonough, United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished services to the Government of the United States, in a duty of great responsibility during World War I. As General Foreman of the St. Nazaire Locomotive Erection Shops, Major McDonough managed this plant from its organization in September 1917 until June 1918, when he was appointed Superintendent, and thence performed the important duties of this later office until his death in November 1918. It is due to this energy, ability, and devotion to duty that such a great number of American locomotives erected in France were turned out with record speed. He has rendered services of much value.
