The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Colonel (Corps of Engineers) John Clifford Hodges Lee, Sr. (ASN: 0-2582), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as G-2, Intelligence Officer, 82d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near Richecourt, France, on the night of 12 – 13 July 1918, while leading a patrol which penetrated the enemy lines. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Colonel Lee, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Distinguished Service Medal to Lieutenant General John Clifford Hodges Lee, Sr. (ASN: 0-2582), United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished service in a position of great responsibility to the Government of the United States from December 1944 to May 1945, as Commanding General, Services of Supply, European Theater of Operations and later as Commanding General, Communications Zone, European Theater of Operations. During this period, Lieutenant General Lee rendered every aid to the U.S. Navy in solving the many and diverse problems in procuring the supplies necessary to facilitate the prompt and efficient preparation of advanced bases. His cooperation, foresight and great professional skill were in a large part responsible for the success of the joint Army-Navy efforts and were of immeasurable help in the opening of strategic ports on the continent. The leadership and initiative displayed by Lieutenant General Lee are in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Armed Services.

War Department, General Orders No. 59 (1919)The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal to Colonel (Corps of Engineers) John Clifford Hodges Lee, Sr. (ASN: 0-2582), United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished services to the Government of the United States, in a duty of great responsibility during World War I. In the preparations for the drive on the St. Mihiel salient in September 1918, and for the Argonne-Meuse offensive in October 1918, Colonel Lee had charge of the detailed arrangements for and subsequent execution of the operations of the 89th Division. The successes attained by this Division were largely due to his splendid staff coordination, marked tactical ability, and sound judgment.
