    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal to Colonel (Corps of Engineers) John Monroe Johnson, United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished services to the Government of the United States, in a duty of great responsibility during World War I. Colonel Johnson served with distinction with the 117th Engineers, 42d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in various capacities until October 1918, when he became Commanding Officer of that regiment. He also served as Chief Engineer, 42d Division, and was charged with the duty of repairing and opening up roads and routes for the advance of all troops in the division sector during the Meuse-Argonne offensive. By his sound judgment, untiring energy, great resourcefulness, and ability, he contributed materially to the success of the American Expeditionary Forces.
