The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal to Colonel Jacob Calvin Johnson, United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished services to the Government of the United States, in a duty of great responsibility during World War I. As Inspector General of the 1st Army Corps and later of the 1st Army, Colonel Johnson performed exacting tasks with distinction throughout the Marne-Chateau-Thierry, St. Mihiel, and Meuse-Argonne operations. Both during the months of actual fighting and the periods of training before and after the campaign, he displayed conspicuous devotion to duty, unfailing zeal, and loyalty, acting always with sound judgment.
