The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal to Captain (Infantry) John C. Hughes, United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished services to the Government of the United States, in a duty of great responsibility during World War I. As Aide-de-Camp to the Commander in Chief, American Expeditionary Forces, Captain Hughes performed duties of an exacting nature with peculiar tact, ability, and untiring energy, proving himself sound in judgment and indefatigable in all tasks assigned to him. At all times he served with distinction, rendering exceptional service.
