The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal to Mr. S. H. Hodge, a United States Civilian, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished services to the Government of the United States, in a duty of great responsibility during World War I. Placed in charge of storage procurement for the Army, Mr. Hodge rendered invaluable service in obtaining for the use of the Army an enormous amount of storage space at a cost averaging less than the commercial rate, thereby effecting a very substantial saving and enabling the Storage Division to meet a most pressing need for space required to mobilize and preserve the immense quantities of supplies gathered for the use of the Army. By his technical knowledge, broad judgment, and energetic action valuable results were obtained.
