The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal to Lieutenant Colonel (Medical Corps) Samuel C. Gunby, United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished services to the Government of the United States, in a duty of great responsibility during World War I, in evacuating and personally caring for the wounded of the 3d Division under heavy shell and machine-gun fire daily during the defensive and offensive operations on the Marne and for great devotion under shell fire in personally establishing the Battalion Aid Stations at Chartreves, Jaulgonne, and Le Charmel between 14 July and 1 August 1918.
