The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal to Colonel (Infantry) Leigh R. Gignilliat, United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished services to the Government of the United States, in a duty of great responsibility during World War I. As G-2 of the 84th Division from 6 October 1917 until 9 November 1918, and of the 37th Division from 9 November 1918 until 15 March 1919, Colonel Gignilliat displayed an unusual devotion to duty and military attainments of a high order, which enabled him to place the Intelligence Sections of both divisions on a high plane of efficiency. From 15 March 1919 to 27 June 1919, as the United States’ representative on the Interallied Food Commission, by rare tact, great energy, and marked executive ability he solved with conspicuous success many perplexing problems of supply in our occupied area.
