    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal to Brigadier General William Church Davis, United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished services to the Government of the United States, in a duty of great responsibility during World War I. In command of the Artillery support of the Fifth Corps in November 1918, General Davis rendered services of the highest order. Through his energy, intelligence, and skill his guns were ever ready for an emergency. The successes of the operations between the Meuse and the Argonne Forest were in a measure due to his strong support of the attacking Infantry.
