    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal to Colonel (Medical Corps) Harvey Cushing, United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished services to the Government of the United States, in a duty of great responsibility during World War I. As Senior Consultant of Neurological Surgery, American Expeditionary Forces, and in direct charge of the treatment of gunshot wounds of the head in hospitals of the 1st Army, American Expeditionary Forces, during the Meuse-Argonne offensive, Colonel Cushing performed conspicuous and distinguished service to the Government, and through his individual efforts in that capacity saved the lives of many severely wounded soldiers.
