The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal to Lieutenant Colonel (Medical Corps) William H. Bishop, United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished services to the Government of the United States, in a duty of great responsibility during World War I. At Orleans, France, by his great ability, initiative, and tact, Lieutenant Colonel Bishop enlisted the sympathies of the French authorities and people, obtained buildings, organized and enlarged the base hospital, and contributed materially to the care of the sick and wounded during the operations of 1918. He has rendered services of much value. This efficient hospitalization was later adopted as a model by the French medical service.
