The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal to Colonel (Corps of Engineers) Albert Hilands Acher, United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished services to the Government of the United States, in a duty of great responsibility during World War I. As Commanding Officer of the 4th Engineers he contributed materially to the successes of the 4th Division in the Aisne-Marne offensive and in the Meuse-Argonne operations. By his skill in the construction of roads and bridges, he ably assisted in the operations of his division. His ability as a leader was shown in the efficiency of the 4th Engineers, both as a technical and as a combat unit. Later he showed the same rare qualities when he commanded the 27th Engineers.
