The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Navy Cross (Posthumously) to Nurse Edna E. Place, United States Navy, for distinguished service and devotion to duty, while serving at the Naval Hospital, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. During the epidemic of influenza Nurse Place worked day and night among the patients until stricken with the disease, as a result of which she lost her life on 25 September 1918.
