By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Lieutenant Commander (MC) Joel Thompson Boone, United States Navy, is cited by the Commanding General, SECOND DIVISION A.E.F., for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Lieutenant Commander Boone distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving as a Medical Officer with the Sixth Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces. Throughout the period of operations against the enemy from 1 to 10 June 1918, he rendered conspicuous service in the treatment and evacuation of the wounded. He was under heavy shell fire for days. When the Regimental Aid Station was struck and men were killed in the immediate vicinity, he showe3d rare fidelity to duty and, through his shining example, urged officers and men to renewed efforts and displayed a high type of executive ability.
