George Barnett entered the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis in June 1877, graduating with the Class of 1881, the first Academy class to provide officers to the Marine Corps. From February 25, 1914 to June 30, 1920, he served as the 12th Commandant of the Marine Corps.
