The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Lieutenant Georges Wackernie, Army of France, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 54th Regiment of Infantry, 7th U.S. Machine Gun Battalion (Attached), 3d Division, A.E.F., during the operations against the enemy at Chateau-Thierry, France, from May 31 to 4 June 1918. Lieutenant Wackernie constantly distinguished himself by his extraordinary heroism in voluntarily going through heavy machine-gun fire in order to secure and give important information which could not otherwise be communicated.
