The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Marechal des Logis Louis Verry, Army of France, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving as Interpreter, Fifth Regiment (U.S. Marine Corps) (Attached), 2d Division, A.E.F., near Soissons, France, 18 July 1918. Under heavy enemy shellfire Marechal des Logis Verry volunteered to lead a liaison patrol for the purpose of establishing liaison with French units on the left. He and three American soldiers were killed by shellfire after advancing only a few yards on this perilous mission.
