The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Air Service) Alan Nutt, United States Army Air Service, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 94th Aero Squadron, 1st Pursuit Group, U.S. Army Air Service, A.E.F., near Forges, France, 26 September 1918. While on a patrol Lieutenant Nutt encountered and attacked unhesitatingly eight Fokker planes. After a few minutes of severe fighting, during which he displayed indomitable courage and determination, this officer shot down one of the enemy planes. Totally surrounded, outnumbered, and without a thought of escape, he continued the attack until he was shot down in flames near Drillancourt.
