The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Hospital Apprentice Carl Oliver Kingsbury, United States Navy, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving as Corpsman (Attached), Headquarters, Sixth Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F., on the morning of 13 April 1918. Hospital Apprentice Kingsbury displayed commendable action in the immediate care and attention incident to the evacuation of more than 100 casualties following the gas-shell bombardment on the morning of 13 April 1918, after he himself had been subjected to gas. He worked incessantly, disregarding his own symptoms, until he had to be evacuated.
