The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Second Lieutenant (Air Service) Arthur Hast Jones, United States Army Air Service, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 147th Aero Squadron, 1st Pursuit Group, U.S. Army Air Service, A.E.F., in the Toul sector, 16 July 1918. Lieutenant Jones and four other pilots were attacked by nine German pursuit planes. Without hesitation he dived into the leader of the enemy formation, pouring machinegun fire into him at 100 yards. After a quick and decisive combat the enemy leader fell out of control. He then attacked two of the other enemy planes, which were attacking him from the rear, and succeeded in driving them off.
