Posing as Canadian, James Hall joined the French Air Service in 1916 and earned the French Croix de Guerre, before joining the U.S. Air Serice in 1917. He was credited with 3 aerial victories in World War I. An avid writer, after the war, among his books was the best selling “Mutiny on the Bounty” trilogy.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Captain (Air Service) James Norman Hall, United States Army Air Service, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 103d Aero Squadron, 3d Pursuit Group, U.S. Army Air Service, A.E.F., near Reims, France, on 27 March 1918. While leading a patrol of three Captain Hall attacked a group of five enemy fighters and three enemy two-seaters, himself destroying one and forcing down two others in a fight lasting more than 20 minutes.
