The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Captain (Air Service) Charles Gossage Grey, United States Army Air Service, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 213th Aero Squadron, U.S. Army Air Service, A.E.F., near Montmedy, France, 4 November 1918. While leading a patrol of three machines, Captain Grey observed a formation of our bombing planes hard pressed by 12 of the enemy. He attacked the leading enemy machine without hesitation, thereby attracting the enemy’s fire and allowing the bombing machines to escape undamaged.
