The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Second Lieutenant of Artillery Jean C. Gauthier, Army of France, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving as Liaison Officer, 371st U.S. Infantry (Attached), 93d Division, A.E.F., near Bussy Farm, France, 29 September 1918. While on duty as French Liaison officer with the 371st Infantry, Lieutenant Gauthier was knocked down by a shell which burst near by during a severe artillery barrage. He immediately resumed the advance with the utmost coolness, affording an excellent example to the men near him. During the whole battle he was many times exposed to heavy fire in maintaining liaison and performing other voluntary service; his experience, sangfroid, and judgment assisting materially in the success of the operation.
