The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Lieutenant Emmanual P. F. Gauffeny, Army of France, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 146th Regiment (Infantry), Army of France, in the St. Mihiel sector, France, 26 September 1918. Commanding and leading a raid against the enemy, in spite of the severe shelling Lieutenant Gauffeny reached his objective and took many prisoners. His great courage during most hazardous reconnaissances won the admiration of all under his command, and the information he supplied was always of the utmost value.
